Walking the iconic Rakiura Track: New Zealand’s most underrated Great Walk

I recently had the privilege of embarking on the Rakiura Track, a lesser-known but equally breathtaking Great Walk in the land of the long white cloud. Join me as I share my unforgettable journey through this hidden gem of New Zealand.

The Rakiura Track is located on Stewart Island, the third-largest island of New Zealand. It offers a unique and off-the-beaten-path experience, away from the crowds that often flock to the more well-known trails. This track showcases the raw beauty of nature, with its diverse landscapes and unspoiled wilderness.

Setting off on the Rakiura Track, I was immediately immersed in a world of towering mountains, lush native bush, and sparkling coastlines. The track weaves its way through ancient forests, where moss-covered trees and ferns create a magical atmosphere. The air is filled with the sweet scent of nature, and the sounds of birdsong fill the silence.

One of the highlights of the Rakiura Track is the opportunity to encounter a wide range of native wildlife. From curious kiwi birds to elusive native orchids, this walk is a haven for nature enthusiasts. I was lucky enough to spot several species of birds, including the rare and endangered yellow-eyed penguin. The sight of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was a truly awe-inspiring moment.

As I continued along the track, I was treated to stunning vistas of the rugged coastline. The turquoise waters of the sea crashed against dramatic cliffs, creating a symphony of sights and sounds. The ever-changing light added an extra layer of magic to the landscape, as the sun painted the sky with hues of orange and pink during sunrise and sunset.

The Rakiura Track also offers a sense of isolation and tranquility. With only a limited number of hikers allowed on the track each day, it felt like I had the entire wilderness to myself. The absence of cell phone coverage and the simplicity of the trail allowed me to truly disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with nature.

Along the way, I stayed in cosy huts nestled amidst the bush. These huts provided a welcome respite after a day of walking, offering a place to rest, share stories with fellow hikers, and soak in the surrounding beauty. The friendships forged over shared meals and conversations added an extra dimension to the experience.

The Rakiura Track is not an easy feat. It requires physical endurance and a sense of adventure. The trail can be challenging at times, with uneven terrain and inclines that test your stamina. But the rewards are well worth the effort. The sense of achievement that comes with completing this trail is indescribable.

Walking the Rakiura Track was not just a physical journey; it was a journey of the soul. It reminded me of the importance of protecting and cherishing our natural world. The track left an imprint on my heart, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the beauty and fragility of our planet.

If you’re seeking an adventure that goes beyond the ordinary, I highly recommend adding the Rakiura Track to your bucket list. It’s a hidden gem that offers a unique and unforgettable experience. So, lace up your boots, embrace the wilderness, and let the Rakiura Track lead you to the most unexpected corners of New Zealand’s natural wonders.
